March is Reading Month
March is Reading Month! We have several fun and educational activities planned for the month, including a Reading Spirit Week.
Theme: I Love Reading
Goal: The ultimate goal of Reading Month is to significantly increase YCMS student interest in reading and ability to read.
Activities:
D.E.A.R. Time 10:00-10:15 daily
Everyday at 10:00am the entire school will read silently for 15 minutes. Students should be prepared by selecting a book during 1st period or at the start of the class period they will have during D.E.A.R. time.
Read 180 Challenge- 150 minutes per week
Special Rewards for…
Cohorts with the highest number of minutes, Top 3 Building Wide
Grade Level with the highest number of minutes
Cohorts with the highest % of accuracy on Read 180, Top 3 cohorts over 80% accuracy
Individual students who complete 3 or more Segments and pass the “Success Zone” Assessment
Student News Book Talks
Each week one YCMS instructor and one YCMS student will be selected to discuss a book that they have read from the library. The participants will discuss the genre, plot, and cultural context of the book as well as their general interest in the book.

Wednesday, March 13th- Pajama Day!
Thursday, March 14th- Sports Jersey Twin Day!
Friday, March 15th- Wear Red for Reading Day!
Favorite Book Cover Design
Students can voluntarily design a book cover of their favorite book on Canva for dual extra credit in their grade level ELA class and Reading Enrichment class. Eighth grade students would receive extra credit in ELA and Spanish. The book Cover Designs will be displayed in the YCMS Library. More details to come.
