Health Conditions
Please notify the school of any health management needs or diagnosis when appropriate. Our goal is to collaborate with students, parents, health care providers, and staff to create a safe and supportive school environment for students with chronic health conditions.
It is recommended that you provide a written description of your student’s health needs at school including medication authorization and an emergency plan. These are often referred to as “action plans” and can be requested from your child’s health care provider. Please provide the school with a copy that is signed by both a physician and a parent/guardian.
Examples of chronic health conditions in which the school would benefit from an action plan:
- Asthma
- Seizure disorders
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Diabetes
- Serious allergies
Medication at School
Before a child can be administered any prescription or treatment, the school must receive written permission from both the child’s physician and parent/guardian.
Authorization for Medication During School Hours
Parents should determine with their physician's counsel whether the medication schedule can be adjusted to avoid administering medication during school hours.
Medication must be brought to the school directly by the parent. A four week supply of medication is recommended.
Any unused medication unclaimed by the parent will be destroyed by administrative personnel when a prescription is no longer to be administered or at the end of a school year.
Emergency Medication
Students may possess and self-administer prescribed emergency medication and asthma inhalers in accord with the Superintendent's guidelines if the following criteria are met:
The child is of appropriate age and maturity to self-carry and self-administer inhaler. Inhalers at Early Learning Centers and Elementary Schools are secured with school staff or nurse to ensure appropriate use. Please contact the school nurse if you have questions or concerns.
Building administrator receives a copy of written permission from both the child’s physician and parent/guardian.
Parent Resources
Communications will be sent home when vision/hearing screenings and mobile dentists are available at school.
