Food Assistance for Your School Families

Dear Families,

As you know, the coronavirus has caused an economic crisis as well as a health one. This pandemic continues to impact families in our district in many ways, including layoffs, income changes and financial strain.

If you have recently lost income and need assistance with food, you may be eligible for a benefit through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP provides a monthly benefit on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card (known as the MI Bridge Card) that can be used to buy food at grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and any food store with the USDA sign “EBT Accepted.”

Application Process for the 2020 - 2021 School Year

Washtenaw International High School
Application Process for the 2020 - 2021 School Year

Dear YIES 5th-grade families,

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) partner school with Washtenaw International Middle Academy (WIMA), we want to share important dates and details about the 6th-grade WIMA Application Process for the 2020-2021 school year. We hope you can join us at the WIMA Admissions Info Night on January 8th @ 6pm where you can learn about WIMA's caring, diverse, and academically-focused learning community! The application opens tomorrow, Friday, November 8th and closes February 7th. For more information about WIMA&WIHI, please visit our website (wihi.org) and view this informational video.

YIES students who apply prior to the deadline have priority into WIMA after siblings (State Policy) are admitted. Since we have limited seats (64 total), we will likely have a lottery for the seats available for WIMA 6th grade students. Please review the dates and application details attached and contact admissions coordinator, Kelly Cartwright (KCartwright@wihi.org) with any questions.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school community!

Sincerely,
Ms. Do

Program Director, Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium

First Day of school at YCS

Ypsilanti Community School (YCS) is excited to start the 2020-2021 school year under new learning options for students and families to stay safe and healthy!

YCS is dedicated to student achievement and supporting the community, which was evident over the last four months as the district quickly transitioned to an online learning platform.  Our administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, and other staff are ready for the new school year as we adjust to face to face learning for our most vulnerable students and online learning for the majority of our students.

We have worked tirelessly to prepare for Tuesday, September 8th, to ensure the safety of our students and staff while ensuring that our pre-k-12th graders are experiencing interactive learning opportunities remotely that will enrich their minds.  At YCS, we know our young scholars are resilient and will work hard to adjust to the new mode of learning.

A few reminders:

The YCS District Update was sent out last week to give families an outline to the start of the school year and how learning will operate per grade level.   Please review this outline and check your student’s PowerSchool account for detailed schedule updates and information.  All classes begin Tuesday, September 8th.

YCS Transportation Department has prepared bus routes for students who will have face to face classes starting Tuesday, September 8th.

YCS Food Distribution also begins on the first day of school.  Students 18 and under are eligible to receive food distribution weekly.  Please review the attached flyer for details about the distribution schedule and locations.

Finally,  as we embark on this new journey together, please join us in celebrating the first day of school!  We have created signs for students, staff, and family to print and share their first day of school photos with us on social media.

YCS Power of YOUth presents: #GiveASmile Gratitude Banner

Our first effort with YCS Power of YOUth is to publicly thank some of the essential workers in the Ypsilanti Community. We decided to personally thank the essential workers from our community who work hard and take risks so that the majority of us can buy food and have what we need. We chose to begin with grocery store workers. Our community will design a banner that will be displayed in local Kroger stores to express to the workers that we appreciate them, that we see them, and that we value them. This is a fun activity that offers families, siblings, and students an opportunity to create something for others.
