Measles Advisory from Washtenaw County Health Department

A Message from the Washtenaw County Health Department:

A record number of measles cases are confirmed in neighboring counties (30 as of 4/1/19).  Washtenaw County Health Department urges everyone to protect themselves and their families. Measles is highly contagious but vaccine-preventable. There are no measles cases confirmed in Washtenaw as of 4/1/19.

If you do not have a record of two measles (MMR) vaccines, or if you are unsure if you have been vaccinated or have had measles in the past, contact your healthcare provider about getting vaccinated. You can also call the Health Department at 734-544-6700.

Estabrook Heritage Festival

A warm and inviting experience was had by all at Estabrook's Heritage Festival this week! Over 122 people enjoyed tastes of food from around the world provided by Estabrook families.  Students enjoyed filling their passports with country stamps and playing learning games with their blow-up globes. The evening was capped off with a special book reading by Principal Johnson, with translation provided by EL Educator, Margarita Dirlikov and with a final closing performance by Capoeira!

Capoeira is an art form that defies description. It began in Brazil and  It is a fast and versatile Martial Art that involves creativity, intuition, grace, strength, history, and tradition.  Capoeira is also a story of triumph and freedom, as it is rooted in the rich cultures brought to Brazil by enslaved Africans. Capoeira is now spreading across our world.

Estabrook families and staff look forward to what we will learn about at next year's Heritage event!

Mom Power

What is Mom Power?
Mom Power was developed by faculty at Michigan Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and has been brought to Washtenaw County families through a grant from Michigan Medicine's Community Health Services.

Mom Power is an evidence-based program that supports families who are facing adversity and stress through the challenges of caring for young children, offering a strengths-based, nurturing approach to promoting resilience in parents and children. The Mom Power multifamily group provides a safe, trusting, and nurturing environment that allows families to learn and practice new skills. The 13-session group focuses on increasing parenting skills, connecting mothers to other mothers, connecting mothers to local resources, supporting mothers in using self-care skills, and supporting relationships between mothers and their young children.

Children attend Mom Power groups as well and enjoy 1:1 supervision with U-M students while the moms meet. A meal is also provided at each meeting.

Who is eligible to participate?
Mom Power is intended for people who identify as female, are age 18 or older, and are pregnant or have children age 6 and under. Immigrants, refugees and all who live in Washtenaw County are welcome to attend.

When will they meet?
Our first group will meet on Tuesdays from 1:30-3:45 from May 21 to July 23. There will be no group on July 2. The group will meet in Ypsilanti. A specific location will be determined soon.

For more information on Mom Power, please visit this website. Link to the registration form at bit.ly/mompowersignup.
