Health & Wellness
DISTRICT WELLNESS POLICY
Ypsilanti Community School’s Board of Education recognizes that good nutrition and regular physical activity affect the health and well–being of the district's students. Research concludes that there is a positive connection between a student's health and well-being and his/her ability to learn.
Immunization Requirements
Immunization Information
Parents who need to get their child immunized should contact their primary care physician for immunizations. If they need a waiver, the Health Department is conducting waiver appointments as we are able. Please have parents call us and leave a message at 734-544-6700 to get on a waiting list for a waiver.
State law requires that any student enrolling in a Michigan school for the first time must show proof of immunization against the following diseases or present a waiver that was obtained through the Washtenaw County Health Department with a seal and signature.
♦ DPT (diphtheria, tetanus & pertussis) — must have 4 doses with a booster every 10 years from the last vaccine;
♦ OPV (oral polio) — must have three doses;
♦ MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) — must have 2 doses;
♦ Hepatitis B — must have 3 doses; and
♦ Varicella (chickenpox)
-- or present documented immunity from a reliable source - applies to all new school entrants including kindergarten. This could include a parent’s statement that their child had previously had varicella (chickenpox) disease. State law mandates that an Immunization assessment be completed on preschoolers, kindergarteners, current 7th graders and all students new to the district. This Act was passed so that there would be a means of assuring the children are adequately immunized against preventable disease before they reach adolescence when some of these diseases become a greater threat to their health. If the immunization requirements are not met the student may be excluded from school until proof of required immunizations are obtained and verified and/or if there is a case of certain communicable diseases in the school building. Vaccines can be obtained through the Washtenaw County Health Department (734) 544-6700 or your family physician. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse.

Crisis Response Team
Are you concerned about someone in your class, but don't know what to do about it?
Are you aware of a student who is making poor decisions with alcohol or other substances?
Crisis Response Team Concern Report was formed to address reports of troubling (inappropriate, disruptive, or harmful) student behavior in order to recommend proactive and non-punitive approaches aimed at helping students achieve success and to deal with crisis situations.
The Crisis Response Team represents a cross-section of district professionals who can address a broad range of student needs.
One unique aspect of the CRT is that it serves as a central place to report behaviors of concern. Any person who is concerned with a student's behavior can make a referral through our online Concern Report. The CRT follows a review process to address the Concern Report at regularly scheduled meetings or, if necessary, at special meetings. The resolution of an expression of concern is always governed by a course of action that balances the best interest of the student with those of the YCS community.
If you want to alert the Crisis Response Team about a YCS student you are concerned about
If this is a crisis situation such as a risk of harm to self or others, notify the Washtenaw County Crisis Response - 734-994-2911 or call 911.

Michigan Protection Registry Information

Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. Texting their advertisements is the newest marketing effort that many of these companies are using. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan’s families and schools and can be located at - Link to Protect MI Child
As a strong supporter of this registry, I would like to encourage you to sign your entire family up for the registry and inform your friends and colleagues about how they can protect children and families from unwanted adult advertising. To sign up only takes seconds. Just go to - Link to Protect MI Child and keep your family safe.
Physical Education
Language for Physical Education
Ypsilanti Community Schools offers a robust Physical Education skill-based program with a planned program of instruction. Physical education educators use practices outlined by the State of Michigan’s Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum (EPEC). Each building also holds various wellness evening events and daytime field days. The goal at YCS is to create physically literate individuals who can lead a lifestyle of health and fitness long after their they leave our school district.
Developmental Skills
At the elementary level, physical education focuses on the areas of motor skill development, object control skills, and general comfort with physical fitness.
At the middle school level, games and activities build upon learned skills to assist in forming lifetime habits.
High school students are given opportunities to design their own physical fitness program based on previously learned skills and habits.
Partners
Ypsilanti Community Schools has a valuable pool of partners to collaborate with resources and events including YMCA, EMU, Food Gatherers, growing hope, University of Michigan’s Project Healthy Schools, St. Joseph Mercy Health System, PE-Nut and more.
