Barbering
The Barbering A & B program is a two-year Career and Technical Education (CTE) program designed to prepare students for careers, entrepreneurship, and postsecondary opportunities in Michigan’s barbering, grooming, and personal care industry. Through classroom instruction and extensive hands-on learning experiences, students develop the technical skills, professional knowledge, customer service skills, and workplace competencies needed to succeed in the barbering profession.
During this two-year program, students receive instruction in:
Haircutting and clipper techniques
Fading, tapering, and blending
Beard and mustache trimming and grooming
Shaving and facial hair design
Hair and scalp care
Shampooing and conditioning
Hairstyling and finishing techniques
Sanitation, infection control, and workplace safety
Proper use and maintenance of barbering tools and equipment
Michigan barbering laws, rules, and professional standards
Client consultation and customer service
Professional communication and workplace etiquette
Barber shop operations and management
Entrepreneurship, marketing, and financial literacy
Leadership development, teamwork, and employability skills
Instruction is delivered through a combination of classroom learning, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in a professional, salon-style learning environment. Students apply barbering theory while gaining practical experience with haircutting, fading, grooming, shaving, styling, sanitation, client consultation, and the safe operation of professional barbering tools and equipment.
The program emphasizes career readiness, professionalism, and preparation for state licensure. Students work toward completing the required instructional and practical training hours while developing the skills and competencies necessary to pursue a career in the barbering industry. Students also explore entrepreneurship and business ownership, providing them with an understanding of what it takes to operate or manage a successful barber shop.
Work-Based Learning
Eligible students may participate in Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences with local barber shops, salons, grooming businesses, and other industry partners. These supervised experiences provide students with opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings while strengthening technical skills, customer service, workplace readiness, and valuable connections with professionals in the barbering industry.
Upon successful completion of the program and all required training hours, students will be prepared to pursue the Michigan barber licensure examination, entry-level employment, apprenticeship opportunities, entrepreneurship, or continued education and training in barbering and related personal care professions.
