Michigan Safe Storage Notice

Ypsilanti Community Schools is sharing important information with families regarding Michigan’s firearm safe storage requirements.

Michigan law requires firearms to be securely stored when minors under age 18 are present or are likely to be present. Safe storage helps protect children and youth and prevent unintentional firearm-related injuries.

Families are encouraged to review the Safe Storage Notice flyer for information about storage requirements, locking devices, frequently asked questions, and resources for obtaining free or low-cost firearm locks and storage.

Safe Storage Notice for Michigan House Bills 5450 and 5451. The flyer explains that Michigan law requires firearms left unattended where a minor under age 18 is present or likely to be present to be secured in a locked box or container and/or unloaded and secured with a locking device, such as a trigger or cable lock. The requirement applies whether the firearm is in the owner’s home or brought to another location. The flyer also highlights frequently asked questions, information about MCL 28.429, safe-storage resources, and information about obtaining free or low-cost firearm locks and storage.
