YCMS Media Center/ Library
Welcome to the Media Center Home Page
My name is Mr. Naeem and I am the Media Specialist/ Librarian. My goals in this position are...
- To help develop and improve literacy and a love for reading and learning.
- To help develop and improve hard and soft skills needed to be successful in an academic setting.
- To provide and safe, calm, and comfortable space for students read, relax, learn, and socialize in.
- To update and grow our library's collection to be reflective of our students interest & lived experience.
- To support and provide students with resources aligned with their goals and dreams.
As I learn more about our students interest, goals, and the resources available to me, there will be more updates. Thank you Grizzlies.
Media Center Updates:
Over the last 4 years I've been able to genrefiy and alphabetize the library. The goal is to make finding titles in our collection easier for students and empower them to explore genres, stories, and authors that they're familiar with while encouraging them to step outside of that comfort zone and trying something new.
- We have also moved from the East Middle School building to the Spencer Lane building and that came with a lot of upgrades to our library.
- We now have 2 book vending machines that students can earn tokens and receive free books. We have a graphic novels, comic books, & manga machine and the other with standard novels.
- We introduced Beanstack challenges that are school wide in year long along with shorter more focused challenges to encourage the students staff and families to read.
- We have expanded our book collection! Grizzlies now have books on financial literacy, personal growth and hygiene, and coding. Along with overhauling our biographies, cookbooks, manga, and graphic novels.
- We have started to lean heavily into the "media" side of the media center by adding 3D holographic fans, arcade machines, Nintendo Switches, race car simulator, VR headsets, and laptops to allow our students access and opportunities to explore technology.
- Media Center Google Classroom
Along with being your Media Specialist, I have stepped into a few more roles at YCMS

826michigan is helping students in Southeast Michigan write better futures, one story at a time.
For more than 20 years, 826michigan has provided free, fun, engaging writing and literacy programs to K-12 students in Detroit, Ypsilanti, and Ann Arbor. Our programs inspire young people to write confidently and skillfully with the help of adult volunteers in their communities. We also amplify the important stories our brilliant writers tell through our robust publishing program.
Over 4,500 students participate in our programs each year, enriching the literary landscape with their powerful voices, boundless creativity, and infectious enthusiasm.
Encourage Free-choice and Independent Reading
Quizzing platforms often limit what students can choose to read based on their reading level and/or the availability of quizzes. When students are given free choice in their independent reading, they’re more likely to finish books and develop a genuine love of reading. With Book Talks with Benny, students can reflect on their reading through fun, chat-style conversations, helping them stay engaged with any book they choose.
