Physical Education / Health Staff:

Mr. Douglas Steinke - Room 124 - dsteinke7@ycschools.us -ext 1029

Mr Steinke is entering his 8th year of teaching Health Education and Physical Education at the high school level.  Mr. Steinke earned his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with concentrations in Health & Safety Education and Physical Education from Indiana University.  He is currently one credit class away from obtaining his Master's degree in Athletic Administration.  His teaching experience includes 3 years at Ypsilanti Community High school and 4 years of experience as Department Chair at John Harlan High School located on Chicago's South Side.

Mathematics - Department Chair

Ms. Danielle Edwards - Room 123 - dedwards5@ycschools.us -ext 1151

As a graduate from both Eastern Michigan University and Willow Run High School, Mrs. Edwards is a proud member of the Ypsilanti community. She holds a Bachelor of Science from EMU in Mathematics for Secondary Education, with a minor in Communications and Theatre Arts. This is her fifth year teaching in the district and her third year in the STEMM Middle College. She teaches 9th/10th grade math in STEMM and she is the Math Department Chair for the high school. Mrs. Edwards is dedicated to her students and you will often see her after school tutoring, attending athletic events or school functions, and helping out with various programs. When she is not spending time at school, she enjoys reading, playing guitar, watching Michigan football, and snowboarding in the winter.

Mr. Tim Hollenbeck - Room 122 -  - thollenbeck5@ycschools.us -ext 1152

Mr. Hollenbeck graduated from Western Michigan University with a major in Secondary Education – Mathematics and minors in Physical Education and Coaching. While earning his degree, Mr. Hollenbeck assisted basketball programs for Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University, and Indiana University (but deep down he will always be a Spartan, at heart).

Tim is entering his first year teaching in the Middle College. Prior to joining the Ypsilanti Community, Mr. Hollenbeck taught math in Kalamazoo, MI for four years. While at Kalamazoo Phoenix High School, Hollenbeck also coached basketball for two years (winning one district championship) and directed two after-school, academic support programs: “Assistance for Athletes Program (ASAP)” and “Math FUNdamentals” with the Kalamazoo Eastside Neighborhood Association.

Growing up in East Lansing, he attended high school, playing basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis. Aside from sports and teaching, Mr. Hollenbeck also enjoys games-of-strategy, time with family and friends, and preparing for his wedding this summer!

Ms. Kreuzer graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Material Science Engineering.  Worked as a metallurgist and technical services manager at Worthington Industries for 7 years.  Graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters Degree in Educational Studies with an emphasis on Secondary Mathematics.

World Language Staff:

Ms. Margarita Bish-Merchan - Room 120 - mbishmerchan2@ycschools.us -ext 1173

Ms. Margarita Bish-Merchan was born in Granada, Spain. She received an M.A. in Foreign Language by the Universidad de Granada (Spain), with a major in English as a Foreign Language and a minor in Spanish. She has been a high school teacher in Spain and has also taught Elementary in Chicago Public Schools. She has been teaching in the Ypsilanti area since 2013. She is the proud mother of a boy and a girl.

Social Studies Staff:

Before moving to Michigan, Mr. Cassetta taught five years in California, where he earned a B.A.in History. He has taught social studies in the Ypsilanti area since 2011, and when he's not at school, you can find him spending time with his two young boys, reading or watching movies, or spending time out in nature biking, hiking, and/or camping.

Mr. Potere graduated from University of Michigan-Flint with a B.A. in English with a writing specialization in 2013. He continued his education at Eastern Michigan University where he got certified to teach English and Speech at the secondary level. Throughout all of this time, he has coached both cross country and track & field at Hartland and Ypsilanti-Lincoln. This is Mr. Potere's first year with Ypsilanti Stemm Middle College, and he is excited to be a part of the YCS community. Outside of school, Mr. Potere enjoys reading, writing, cycling, and running.

English Language Arts Staff:

Ms. Janice Payeur - Room 117 - jpayeur6@ycschools.us -ext 1145

Janice Payeur is a proud product of Ypsilanti Public Schools class of 1979 and an employee of Ypsilanti High School since 1986. She holds a B.A. in English and French and an M.A. in Secondary Education. Additionally, she is certified to teach Advanced Placement courses in English Literature, Language and Writing. Over the years she has taught every level of English from 7th through 12th grade.  Her points of pride continue to be the students who have grown into professionals themselves - including some of our teachers. Together with students she has overseen the yearbook, student newspapers, trips to see Shakespearean drama in Stratford, Ontario, numerous hair and makeup stints for fall and spring plays and many more activities. She often donates her time to tutoring and loves to teach crafts.

Science Department Chair / Biology / Anatomy Staff:

Ms. Lindsay Hershberger - Room 115 - lhershberger2@ycschools.us -ext 1143

Originally from Ohio, Mrs. Hershberger moved to Michigan in 2014 when her husband began attending Pharmacy School at the University of Michigan. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Life Science Education from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. In college, she was involved in mentorship programs and played ultimate frisbee. This is her third year teaching at Ypsilanti Community High School and her first year joining the STEMM Middle College. Mrs. Hershberger has recently taken on the role of Science Department Chair and looks forward to providing Ypsilanti students with a one-of-a-kind science education. Mrs. Hershberger loves being a part of the Ypsilanti Community. You can often find her and her husband at sporting events, choir/band concerts, and other community events. In her free time she loves to hike, volunteer at church, travel, read, and play ultimate frisbee.

STEMM Middle College Director / Engineering Staff:

Mr. D. Scott Heister - Room 114 - sheister9@ycschools.us -ext 1137

Mr. Heister grew up in Flint, Michigan - graduated with a BS in Biology / Minor in Physics from the University of Michigan, Flint in 1990. He received a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit in 2002. In1999 he was named the Michigan Science Teacher’s Association High School Science Teacher of the Year, and has been honored as Teacher of the Year by The University of Michigan Chapter of Sigma Xi (2012), Detroit Mercy (1997 & 1998) and Lawrence Technological University (2012). He has taught in the Ypsilanti community for the past 25 years, has coached many teams, including golf, hockey, and soccer, and has been the Lead Mentor for the Award Winning FIRST Robotics Program since 2004. He also runs the Science Club, which has taken hundreds of students on wilderness adventures since 1995. Scott has also worked extensively with the Winter Guard program at Ypsilanti, running the program from 1998-2004 & 2014-15. He was inducted into the Michigan Color Guard Circuit Hall of Fame in 1996.

Mr. Heister was recently named the Yankee Air Museum 2015 STEM Excellence Award Winner. He is also being honored by the Mentor2Youth Program at their "The Magnificent Seven: An Honorary Gala" at EMU for the impacts he has had on the youth in the Ypsilanti Area. He continues to donate his time and efforts to the Ypsilanti Community. 

Chemistry / Physics / Engineering Staff:

Mr. Dan Schunck Jr.- Room 113 - dschunck3@ycschools.us -ext 1141

Mr. Schunck graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and General Science. He graduated from the University of Michigan Dearborn in 2014 with a Master of Arts in Education and a focus on English as a Second Language.  Mr. Schunck has spent the past 11 years teaching math, science, and engineering courses and is now excited to be teaching in his own community of Ypsilanti.

Mr. Chris Donoghue - Counseling Office - cdonoghue9@ycschools.us -ext 1072

Chris is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology, as well as a M.A. in School Counseling with a Counseling Interventions in a Multicultural Society Certificate. With 9 years of experience as both a middle school and a high school counselor Mr. Donoghue brings a plethora of knowledge and experience to the school. With a focus on helping students succeed academically, personally, and socially Mr. Donoghue maintains high expectations for all students. Volunteer work is important to Mr. Donoghue and he frequently can be found in your community volunteering at Therapeutic Riding and other local opportunities. Mr. Donoghue assists students in finding opportunities to work and volunteer in the community.
